Kennebec Maine Coon Cattery is located in Western Pennsylvania, just North of downtown Pittsburgh. We started raising and showing Maine Coon cats in 1976, when the breed was just getting established as an “official” purebred cat. When our children came along, we took a break to raise them and started with the cats again in 1996. Kennebec is the name of a river in Maine, the home state of the Maine Coon cat. The Kennebec River was named by the Abnakis Indians. The name translates to “long quiet waters” and probably referred to the stretch of water below Augusta which is “without falls”. We wanted a name for our cattery that celebrated the heritage of the breed. The Maine Coon breed has come a long way from its beginnings and we’re proud to be working with these wonderful cats. The Maine Coon is America’s purebred long-haired cat (and the Maine State cat). Above picture is SGCA Kennebec Wild Mage (black smoke/white).
We also work with Orientals - both shorthair and longhair with occasional Balines and Siamese. My oldest daughter and I started working with this wonderful breed in 1997. Email me at kathyrobins@gmail.com if you are interested in being placed on a list to be notified when we have kittens of either breed (please specify breed you are interested in)..
Our cattery is a FeLeuk/FIV negative environment. Every cat that joins our household is quarantined and tested. We do routine echocardiograms for HCM (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy) with the Maine Coons and our cats are DNA negative for the HCM gene as well as checked for other genetic problems. We do the best we can with the information we can get to raise healthy kittens. All kittens are sold with a contract which includes a health gurantee and on a neuter/spay basis (you get registration papers with proof of ownership when we get proof of altering). We are a small home based cattery with only a few breeding girls of either breed. Our girls usually have one litter a year, so sometimes the wait is long.
Maine Coons are wonderful companions. They love to be where you are and do what you are doing. The boys are generally 12-18 pounds with the girls being a bit smaller at 8-12 pounds. They mostly get along with everyone (including dogs if properly introduced) and are great with kids. Orientals are very people oriented and are frequently very in your face, but they also like to have other feline companionship and are known to do slinkie piles in the nearest cuddle bed.

DownloadOnce you are on the waiting list, you will be notified when we have kittens available. At that time, a deposit will hold the kitten until pickup. If you change your mind or circumstances change, the deposit is refundable (minus $50) once the kitten has been placed. Our kittens usually go to their new homes at 13/14 weeks with two of three kitten shots (third given at 16 weeks), a rabies shot and a well vet visit.
